Welcome to the Coach House
It’s the stuff of local chatter and national headlines alike: Hamilton is mounting a major renaissance, with strong civic plans and valuable incentives funneling fresh faces, multi-million-dollar developments, and new businesses into the city by droves.
It all spells big change—and big opportunity—for restaurants like The Coach House Tavern & Grille, which has spent the last few years innovating, renovating, and setting the stage for what’s next.
Once a members-only restaurant, The Coach House opened its doors to the public in 2015, expanding both the physical space and menu to showcase regional flair. Bright, creamy lemon posset. Tender, rum-braised goat. Vine-ripe tomato compote over blackened shrimp and chunky grits. These flavors practically jump off the menu, but the one that lingers most satisfyingly is by far the sense of community and friendship that permeate this place.
When Head Chef Chris Stout took the helm last year, he continued forging relationships with area purveyors like Reserve Run Farms, Municipal Brew Works, The Village Parlor and 80 Acres Farms, sourcing intensely fresh ingredients with one simple goal: “create the most delicious comfort food imaginable.”
And comfort, it does. An unmistakable ribbon of homemade goodness runs through everything from the crisp pear salad to the rich French onion soup. Meanwhile, classics like marinated beef steak and pasta primavera benefit heartily from Chef Chris’s commitment to preserving every last fiber he can for truly original stocks, bases, vinaigrettes, and marinades.
On the picturesque back patio, amid tottering geese and bubbling fountains, The Coach House hosts dozens of events throughout the year that embrace the very best of local food, drink, art, and live music. Many of the staff grew up nearby and have worked together for years. They’re quick with conversation and warm jokes.
“We get a really fun mix of older, younger, urban, rural, ‘townies’ and visitors,” says Operations Manager Sara Stevens. “The thing they all have in common is, people are getting more curious about their food—where it comes from, what goes into making it, what we love most about it. We could have those conversations all day long.”
They’re also happy to make after-dinner recommendations for folks making the most of their visit to buzzing Hamilton. On a given evening, a post-meal chocolate port might lead to more libations at nearby Municipal Brew Works or The Casual Pint. Or, you might take a stroll riverside, beckoned by the sweet sounds escaping from Marcum Park. In a place so full of renewed hope and the promise of lasting friendship, literally anything is possible.
