I’m sitting at my desk on an unseasonably warm day a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving and I’m absolutely bewildered that the holidays are nearly upon us. Where did this year go, anyway?
At the risk of using this column as a therapy session, I’ll share that I’m the kind of person who lives too much in her head, easily sidetracked by thoughts and plans and feelings from what’s happening right in front of me. If I’m not careful and present in the moment, time tends to fly by. Too, Rob and I had a much-dreamed-of trip to Rome at the end of September that cast a long shadow both before and since. I guess I’ll just say I’ve been distracted. That said, summer does hold some terrific memories, among them:
Witnessing Danger Wheel, Pendleton’s one-of-a-kind neighborhood event, and laughing with friends until we cried as people wiped out on adult-sized bigwheel racers. A bottle of wine at Hart & Cru helped set the mood. I highly recommend both.
An unexpected Halloween haul of cherry tomatoes from two plants I plunked into my garden around the Fourth of July
A fairly mild summer with evenings of drinks on our backyard patio or at Saeso
A big bowl of tagliatelle Bolognese in the cozy dining room at Forno on one of the coldest nights of fall so far
The magical evening that is Flavor of Findlay: perfect September weather, amazing food, and great company for the market’s annual fundraiser
Two amazing experiences behind the scenes at the Cincinnati Zoo that brought us up close with some of our favorite animals
Another of my highlights is the fall edition of Edible Ohio Valley. It seemed to strike a chord—with our team and contributors, and with readers. I hope you enjoyed it, too.
As this year blends into 2024, let’s make a commitment together, shall we, to stay a little more in the moment, to savor the special things, to fully experience the day-to-day. Here’s to a bright and shiny holiday season, from our Edible family to yours. Cheers!
